YOUTH WRESTLING CAMP  ·  COACH'S HANDOUT

10 DAYS
OF FUN,
FRIENDS
& TECHNIQUE

A summer camp plan built around games, friendships, and falling in love with the sport — not grinding through technique.

THE PHILOSOPHY Kids should leave every day tired, smiling, and already asking when the next practice is. Build wrestlers by making them love being in the room first — technique sticks when they keep coming back.

DAILY STRUCTURE

01 Game-Based Warm-up 15–20 min
02 Technique + Games 20–25 min
03 Structured Live ~20 min
04 Snack & Social 5 min

EQUIPMENT

  • Soft dodgeballs (8–10)
  • Pinnies or flags
  • Cones / agility dots
  • Taped towel for Bulldog
  • Yoga ball
  • 2 pins or water bottles
  • Speaker for music
  • Freeze pops / ice cream
01
DAY ONE
Welcome to the Mat
Focus: Stance and motion.
WARM-UP · 15–18 min

Boomerang Dodgeball

Multiple soft balls scattered on the mat. Kids run around and throw at each other. If hit, drop to hands and knees. Crawl around to grab a ball and throw at someone still standing to get back up. Run 2 rounds of 6–7 min.

  • K–3: no step rules.
  • 4–6: 3-step rule before throwing.
TECHNIQUE + GAMES · 20 min

Athletic Stance + Motion

Feet shoulder-width, knees bent, hands up, butt down. Move forward/back/side without crossing feet. ~2 min explain, then play.

  • Stance Statues — kids move in stance with loud music playing. Music stops = freeze. Coach gently nudges anyone in a bad stance. Nudged = silly dance, rejoin. 3–4 rounds.
  • Push Out the Circle (Winner Stays) — split kids into 3 size-based groups, one group per circle on the mats. Hands on partner's shoulders, push them out. Winner stays in, next kid steps up. Run ~12 min.
STRUCTURED LIVE · 18–20 min

Keep kids in their same 3 size-based groups, one per circle. Three formats:

1. Off-Balance Battles · ~5 min
  • Round 1: both on knees, can't step up with a foot. Off-balance partner so they touch a hand down.
  • Round 2: one knee up, same goal. Switch partners between rounds — don't drag this out.
2. King of the Circle, Takedowns · ~5 min

Same 3 groups, same circles. Full takedowns now. Winner stays, loser rotates out.

3. Free Live · ~10 min

Open live wrestling. Switch partners every couple of minutes. Shake hands, find a new partner, go again.

MODIFICATIONS
K–3

Off-Balance Battles — round 1 only, skip round 2. Free live stays on knees.

4–6

Both off-balance rounds. Free live can be from feet (no slamming).

02
DAY TWO
Attack the Legs: Double Leg
Focus: Penetration step + double leg + a basic finish.
WARM-UP · 18 min

Boomerang Dodgeball + Towel Bulldog

  • Boomerang Dodgeball (7 min): Get them running around to start. Multiple soft balls. Hit = drop to hands and knees. Crawl around to grab a ball and revive yourself by hitting someone still standing.
  • Towel Bulldog (11 min): Roll up a towel tightly and tape it. Split into 2 teams, number each kid. Coach calls a number — those two sprint to the middle, grab the towel, and pull it to their team's side for a point. Wrestling battle if neither can pull cleanly.
TECHNIQUE + GAMES · 20 min

Double Leg

Drop lead knee between partner's feet → head up, to one side of their body → grab behind both knees → drive through.

KNEE · HEAD · GRAB · DRIVE
  • Knee Tag — partners in stance, goal is to touch BOTH of partner's knees with your hands. Defender uses hands to block. 30-sec rounds, 4 rounds.
  • Setup to Double Leg Finish — partner stands passive. Set up (level change or fake), shoot, finish. How many in 30 sec? Switch. 2 rounds each.
STRUCTURED LIVE + GAME FINISH · 17 min
Double Leg Gos · 12 min

Partners pair up. One wrestler starts already in on a double leg (knee down, head to the side, hands locked behind partner's knees). On GO, wrestle live for 20 seconds. Then switch — the other partner is now in on the double leg. Continue rotating who starts in on the double leg. Switch partners every few rounds.

Sharks and Minnows · last 5 min

Close it out with a favorite. 2–3 sharks on knees in the middle. Minnows try to run across without getting taken down. Tackled = you're a shark.

MODIFICATIONS
K–3

Skip Setup to Double Leg Finish — extra Knee Tag instead. Knee-Start Live as written.

4–6

Live can start from feet — no slamming, "drive through, don't lift."

03
DAY THREE
Attack the Legs: Single Leg
Focus: Two finishes — Quick Change (mid-level) and High-Level Trip.
WARM-UP · 18 min

Boomerang Dodgeball + Shoe Tag + Stance Statues

  • Boomerang Dodgeball (7 min): Multiple soft balls. Hit = down on hands and knees. Crawl to grab a ball, revive yourself by hitting someone standing. If the kids are ready, introduce Partner Dodgeball today instead — both partners must be down to be out.
  • Shoe Tag (8 min): Partners try to tap each other's shoe. One point per tap, stand back up, go again. 60-sec rounds, rotate partners 2–3 times.
  • Stance Statues (3 min): Loud music on, kids move around the mat in stance. Music stops = freeze. Coach nudges anyone in a bad stance — nudged kids do a silly dance and rejoin. Quick refresher on stance before we shoot.
TECHNIQUE + GAMES · 20 min

Single Leg Setup

Step in, knee slide, grab behind their knee, lift the leg.

  • Knee behind or to the side of opponent's foot.
  • Head up, in their ribs.
Finish 1 — Quick Change (mid level)

Outside hand to laces, inside hand attacks the other leg, drive through.

Balance Drill — High-Position Hold

Before Finish 2, get comfortable with the high-leg position. Partner up: one wrestler puts their partner's ankle in their armpit, leg held high. Can they balance for 20 seconds? If not, count how many times they fall — fewer is better. Switch partners, run it again.

Then a quick competition: everyone holds the high position at once. Last one balancing wins. Fall = you're out. 2 rounds.

Finish 2 — High-Level Trip

Get their foot up into your armpit (which they just practiced!), then trip them down with your foot.

  • Single Leg Reps — partners take turns getting to the single leg position. 4 reps Quick Change, 4 reps High-Level Trip. Switch.
  • Beat the Buzzer — partner stands passive with one leg slightly out. Shoot the single, pick a finish. How many in 30 sec? 2 rounds each.
STRUCTURED LIVE: COBRA + SNAKES · 17 min
Cobra · 12 min

Lay out cones or agility dots in a straight line or U-shape, ~6 ft apart. Pair up at each dot — that's the starting spot.

  • 20–30 sec gos. Takedowns only.
  • Winner advances forward one dot toward the head.
  • Loser drops back one dot toward the tail.
  • Nobody wrestles in the same spot twice in a row — except the head and tail (those kids stay in place when they keep winning/losing).
Snakes in the Grass · last 5 min

Send them off with a favorite. 2–3 snakes on knees in the big circle, try to drag the other kids down. Last kid standing wins.

MODIFICATIONS
K–3

Teach ONLY Quick Change, skip the High-Level Trip. Skip Beat the Buzzer — extra Capture the Leg. Cobra rounds 20 sec from knees.

4–6

Both finishes.

04
DAY FOUR
Get Your Grip: Front Headlock
Focus: Sprawl → front headlock → go-behind.
WARM-UP · 18 min

Sharks & Minnows OR Boomerang Dodgeball + Towel Bulldog

  • Pick one (5 min): Sharks & Minnows (2–3 sharks on knees, minnows run across) OR Boomerang Dodgeball (hit = down on hands and knees, crawl to grab a ball and revive). Coach's choice based on what the room needs.
  • Towel Bulldog (13 min): Roll up a towel tightly and tape it. Split into 2 teams, number each kid. Coach calls a number — those two sprint to the middle, grab the towel, and pull it to their team's side for a point. Wrestling battle if neither can pull cleanly.
TECHNIQUE + GAMES · 23 min
Quick Review (5 min)
  • Double Leg (2 min): Quick refresher — knee, head, grab, drive. Demo + a few reps.
  • Single Leg (3 min): Quick refresher — head in ribs, knee behind/beside opponent's foot, lift the leg. Demo Quick Change and High-Level Trip finishes.
New Technique (5 min)
  • Sprawl off a double leg shot (2 min): Partner shoots a double leg, you kick legs back, hips to the mat, chest heavy on their upper back. Demo + a few reps.
  • Sprawl → Front Headlock → Go-Behind (3 min): After the sprawl, grab the front headlock — one hand on tricep, one hand on chin, no locking hands — then circle to one side and come up behind them.
SPRAWL · SNAP · CIRCLE
  • Sprawl Wars (Timed) — partner shoots, you sprawl, grab front headlock, circle behind for the takedown. Reset and go again. How many can you get in 30 seconds? Each partner does 2 rounds.
  • Chase the Rabbit — "rabbit" tries to crawl to a line 10 ft away. To stop them, "wolf" must sprawl, get the front headlock, and get behind for a takedown before they reach the goal line. 30 sec each direction, 3 rounds.
  • Circle Front Head Drill — one partner on hands and knees, other out front with chest on their back. Top circles around partner, stuffing the head as they go. Coach yells "SWITCH" = switch direction. Coach yells "WRESTLE" = live for 30 seconds. Run 4–5 min, 2–3 wrestle calls.
STRUCTURED LIVE: SITUATIONS + 1-1-1 · 17 min
Situational rounds · 12 min

Coach calls a starting position, kids set up, GO. Wrestle the full 20 seconds. Cycle through:

  • Single leg, mid level (one wrestler has it locked up)
  • Single leg in the armpit (high level)
  • Double leg (locked up)
  • Front headlock
  • Chest-to-chest scramble on knees
  • Hand-fight / 2-on-1 grip

Switch partners every 2–3 starts.

End with one 1-1-1 match · 5 min

1 minute neutral, 1 minute top, 1 minute bottom. One match per pair to close out the block.

MODIFICATIONS
K–3

Front headlock = "one hand on tricep, one on chin, then circle." Skip the 1-1-1 — extra situational rounds. Live on knees.

4–6

Full grip. Run the 1-1-1 with feet starts.

05
DAY FIVE
String It Together
Focus: Setting up shots — fakes and snaps.
WARM-UP · 18 min

Sharks & Minnows (Shirt Version) + Crossover

  • Sharks & Minnows / Shirt Version (10 min): Everyone tucks a spare shirt or pinnie into their shorts as a "tail." 2–3 sharks on knees in the middle. Minnows try to run across — sharks pull tails. Lose your tail = you're a shark. Round ends when one kid still has their tail.
  • Crossover (8 min): Split kids into 2 teams. Each team lines up on opposite sides of the wrestling room, kneeling like a football kickoff. Coach says GO — both teams crawl forward on their knees. Goal: reach the opposite side without being put to your back. If a wrestler is put to their back, they join the team that put them there. Keep playing until one team has everyone, or run a timed round and count remaining team members.
TECHNIQUE + GAMES · 20 min

Setting Up Shots

  • Fake shot, then real shot — drop level like you're shooting, they react, you take your shot.
  • Collar tie snap, then shot — hand on back of neck, snap their head down, shoot underneath.
  • Fake & Go — partner stands passive. Fake a shot, wait for reaction, take your shot. 6 reps each.
  • Collar Tie Snap — partners with one collar tie each. Snap partner's head down twice, then shoot. 6 reps each.
  • Shot Circle — small groups in a circle. Coach points at a kid — that kid picks someone and shoots. Three shots total before the next person rotates into the middle.
STRUCTURED LIVE: NUMBERED ROUND-ROBIN · 17 min

Split into groups of 3 or 4. Each kid gets a number. Coach calls matchups so every kid wrestles every other kid:

  • Groups of 4: 1v2, 1v3, 1v4, 2v3, 2v4, 3v4 (then repeat with reverse pairings if time)
  • Groups of 3: 1v2, 1v3, 2v3 (run multiple cycles)

30 seconds per match. Quick handshake, next pair up, go.

Lots of reps, lots of variety — run cycles until time's up.
MODIFICATIONS
K–3

Teach ONLY the fake-shot setup, skip the collar tie. Skip Shot Circle if chaotic — more Fake & Go. Round-robin on knees.

4–6

Both setups. Round-robin from feet.

06
DAY SIX
On Top: Spiral & Chop
Focus: Top breakdowns — spiral ride and chop, both finishing to half nelson.
WARM-UP · 18 min

Boomerang Dodgeball + King of the Circle (Tiered)

  • Boomerang Dodgeball (6–7 min): Multiple soft balls. Hit = down on hands and knees. Crawl to grab a ball, revive yourself by hitting someone standing. Can introduce Partner Dodgeball if the kids are ready.
  • King of the Circle — Tiered Elimination (~11 min): Use all 3 circles on the mat.
    • Everyone starts in Circle 1 — the "champ" circle.
    • Get pushed out → move to Circle 2.
    • Lose in Circle 2 → move to Circle 3.
    • Lose in Circle 3 → grab a drink and sit against the wall.
    Play until you have a Champ (Circle 1), a 2nd Place (Circle 2), and a 3rd Place (Circle 3).
TECHNIQUE + GAMES · 22 min
Referee's Position · 2 min

Teach the kids what referee's position looks like. Show them both the top position and the bottom position. This is the starting shape for everything they'll learn today.

1. Spiral Ride · teach + 2 min practice

One hand in their armpit, other hand in their thigh. Rotate them and drive your feet in a circular pattern toward the side of your armpit hand until they go flat. Partners drill for 2 min with light resistance.

2. Chop · teach + 2 min practice

Hand on the elbow chops and brings their arm and wrist to their belly. Feed the snake — your other hand, which was on their belly, now grabs that wrist. Flatten them out. Partners drill for 2 min.

Break Down Battle

Partners in referee's position. Top has 30 seconds to break partner down to their belly as many times as they can using spiral or chop. Switch positions — 30 seconds again. Count breakdowns.

3. Half Nelson · teach

Thread your near arm under partner's near armpit and up to the back of their head/neck. Cup their head. Drive head and shoulder down and across to turn them to their back.

Combo — Break Down + Half Nelson · 5 min max

Put it together. Partners in referee's position: spiral or chop to break down → dig the half nelson → turn to back. Light resistance, focus on the sequence.

STRUCTURED LIVE + END GAME · 20 min
Top vs Bottom · 1-min gos

Start in referee's position. Top has 1 minute to break their partner down and put them on their back. If they do, top wins. Bottom's job: don't get turned over. Then switch positions. 2 rounds as top, 2 rounds as bottom per partner.

Live Wrestling · 1-min gos

Find a partner, go live for 1 minute. Goal: take them down AND put them on their back. If you do — restart on your feet, shake hands, and go again. Run about 5 rounds, switch partners between rounds.

Shoe Wars · last 5 min

Kids take one shoe off completely and loosen the laces on the other shoe. Everyone into the big circle on their knees. Goal: get everyone else's loose shoe off. If your shoe comes off, you're out — sit along the wall. Last kid with their shoe still on wins. Run 2 rounds.

MODIFICATIONS
K–3

Teach ONLY the spiral ride, skip the chop. Half nelson taught as "scoop the head, chest to chest, put them on their back."

4–6

Both breakdowns. Emphasize "feed the snake" detail on the chop.

07
DAY SEVEN
Break Them Down, Turn Them Over
Focus: Deep waist + far ankle breakdown + half nelson turn.
WARM-UP · 18 min

Knock Down the Pin Dodgeball

Set up a pin or water bottle at each end of the room. Split into 2 teams. One kid per team guards the pin. Pin knocked down by a ball = round over, reset. Hit by a ball = you're down, teammate has to drag you back to your wall to revive.

Run 3–4 rounds of 4 min each. This one always brings huge energy.

TECHNIQUE + GAMES · 20 min

Deep Waist + Far Ankle

  • Deep waist far ankle: Reach across with one arm, grab their far ankle, pull it up and out toward you while driving your weight forward. They flatten.
  • Half nelson: Once flat, thread your near arm under their near armpit and up to the back of their head/neck. Cup their head. Drive head and shoulder down and across to turn them to their back.
  • Deep Waist Reps — referee's position. Top reaches deep waist + far ankle and flattens. 8 reps each.
  • Half Nelson Flow — partner flat on belly. Top threads half nelson, turns to back. No resistance. 6 reps each.
  • Turn Challenge — 45 sec. Top breaks down with deep waist + far ankle, turns with half nelson. Count turns. 3 rounds each way.
STRUCTURED LIVE: COBRA VARIATIONS · 17 min

Same Cobra setup as Day 3 — dots in a line or U, kids paired at each dot, 20–30 sec gos, winner advances toward the head, loser drops toward the tail.

Round 1 — Escape · 8 min

Start in referee's position. Bottom escapes within the time = bottom wins and advances. No escape = top wins and advances.

Round 2 — Turn · 8 min

Start in referee's position. Top turns opponent to their back = top wins and advances. Bottom defends (no back exposure) = bottom wins and advances.

Easy to officiate, kids know exactly what they're trying to do, no confusing point-counting.
MODIFICATIONS
K–3

Half nelson taught as "scoop their head with your arm and roll them." Deep waist far ankle stays the same.

4–6

Full technique. Add "lock your hands" on a deep half nelson for bigger kids.

08
DAY EIGHT
Get Off the Bottom
Focus: Stand-up escape from the bottom.
WARM-UP · 18 min

Yoga Ball Battle + Handball

  • Yoga Ball Battle (10 min): Two kids start wrapped around the yoga ball in the middle. On GO, each tries to wrestle the ball fully under their control. 30-sec rounds, winner stays, loser rotates.
  • Handball (8 min): Goals on each end. Throw to teammates (ball can't hit the ground). Score by throwing into the goal. 3-step rule when holding the ball.
TECHNIQUE + GAMES · 20 min

Stand-Up Escape

  • Hand control — grab top's hand on your stomach.
  • Step up — bring your inside foot up, post on the foot.
  • Hip back — drive your hips back into top, stand up.
  • Turn and face — pivot, face partner, hands up.
HAND · STAND · HIP · TURN
  • Stand-Up Reps — referee's position. Top gives light resistance. Bottom executes the full stand-up. 8 reps each.
  • 30-Second Stand-Up Race — bottom in ref position, top gives realistic resistance. Count successful escapes in 30 sec. 3 rounds each way.
  • Hand Control Battle — both partners try to win wrist control from ref position. 30-sec rounds, 4 rounds. Whoever has wrist control most of the round wins.
STRUCTURED LIVE · 17 min
  • Bottom-Start Live (10 min) — every match starts in referee's position. Bottom has 30 sec to escape, top has 30 sec to control. Swap. Rotate partners.
  • 1-1-1 Matches (7 min) — 1 minute each in neutral, top, bottom. One full match per pair. Closes out the block.
MODIFICATIONS
K–3

Teach as "grab their hand, stand up, turn around." Skip Hand Control Battle — extra Stand-Up Reps. Skip 1-1-1 — more bottom-start rounds.

4–6

Full technique. 1-1-1 from feet.

09
DAY NINE
Dig the Bar + Lock the Cradle
Focus: Two big-time turns from top — armbar and crossface cradle.
WARM-UP · 20 min

Towel Bulldog

Roll up a towel tightly and tape it. Split into 2 teams, number each kid. Teams line up on opposite sides. Coach places towel in the middle and calls a number — those two kids sprint to the middle, grab the towel, and pull it to their team's side for a point. Wrestling battle if neither can pull cleanly.

Run for the full 20 min. Kids will love it the whole time.
TECHNIQUE + GAMES · 23 min
Part 1 — Armbar
  • First, break them down — chop, spiral ride, or deep waist + far ankle.
  • Once flat, dig in the armbar (chicken wing!) — thread your near arm under their near arm, control their wrist or elbow.
  • Run it just like a half nelson — drive their shoulder down and across to turn them to their back.
Part 2 — Crossface Cradle
  • Crossface — bicep to cheek. (Have the kids flex their bicep first so they know what muscle you mean — kids love this.)
  • Post hand on the mat behind their knee.
  • Run their head to the knee — pull hard.
  • Lock your hands.
  • Hip to hip — get your hip tight to theirs.
  • Pull them to their back.
Armbar Block · ~9 min
  • Armbar Reps — partner flat on belly, no resistance. Top works armbar (chicken wing) → roll to back. 5 reps each.
  • Armbar Race — pairs in lines. Bottom starts flat. On GO, top digs the chicken wing and turns. First pair done wins. 3 rounds.
Cradle Block · ~9 min
  • Cradle Reps — partner on all fours, light resistance. Top crossfaces (bicep to cheek), posts behind knee, runs head to knee, locks, hip-to-hip, rolls. 5 reps each.
  • Cradle Race — same line setup. Top in ref position, must break down and finish a cradle. First pair to back wins. 3 rounds.
STRUCTURED LIVE · 17 min
  • Top-Start Situations (8 min) — coach sets weird start positions on the spot, 20-sec gos. Goal: be on top when the go ends. No win/loss tracking, no points — just compete.
  • Coach's Choice Game (4 min) — pick something high-energy: another round of King of the Circle, Speed Wrestling, a quick Cobra block — whatever the room needs.
  • Free Live (5 min) — wrestle for 1 minute, find a new partner, go again, repeat. No scoring. Just wrestle.
MODIFICATIONS
K–3

Armbar = "hook the arm and pull it up, then roll them over." Cradle = "hug their head and one leg, squeeze and roll." Skip Cradle Race — extra Cradle Reps.

4–6

Full technique on both. Coach can offer a "choose your turn" challenge in live — kids pick armbar, half nelson, or cradle, and try to hit it.

10
DAY TEN
Champion's Day
Focus: Celebrate everything they learned. No new technique. All fun.
WARM-UP · 15 min

Vote & Play

Quick vote — which game was their favorite? Play the top 2, ~7 min each.

Safe bets: Boomerang Dodgeball, Knock Down the Pin, Snakes in the Grass, Towel Bulldog. Be ready to run any of them.

TECHNIQUE REVIEW WITH VOLUNTEERS · 15 min

Run through the camp's greatest hits. For each move:

  • Coach demonstrates briefly (15–30 sec).
  • Ask for volunteers — 2 kids come up and demo it for the group.
  • Group hand clap to celebrate them.

Cover: stance → double leg → single leg → sprawl/front headlock → spiral ride or chop → half nelson → stand-up → armbar → cradle.

Move fast. Big energy. Every kid who volunteers gets cheered for.
TEAM COMPETITION + FREE LIVE · 25 min
Wrestling Decathlon · 15 min

Pick 2 captains. Captains alternate picks for teams. Run 3–4 of these events:

  • Towel Tug Bulldog — first to 5 points
  • Sumo Circle Relay — one wrestler per team at a time, push opponent out of the cone circle. Team with most round-wins gets the point.
  • Ball Battle Royale — Boomerang Dodgeball rules, last team with kids standing wins.
  • Sprawl Marathon — last team with kids holding a perfect sprawl wins.
Free Live + Favorite Games · 10 min

Open it up: kids pick partners, wrestle, switch, wrestle, switch. Coach can throw in any game on the fly if energy dips — Snakes in the Grass, Shoe Tag, Yoga Ball Battle. Whatever the room wants.

CLOSING CEREMONY · 5–10 min

Every kid gets recognized for SOMETHING. Prep these ahead of time. Ideas:

  • Best Sprawl · Never Gave Up · Made Everyone Laugh
  • Newest Wrestler of the Week · Most Improved Stance
  • Hardest Worker · Best Teammate · Future State Champ
Make one up for every kid. No exceptions. Then: freeze pops, ice cream, group photo. Tell them when the next camp / season is. Hug it out.

COACHING NOTES

Instruction length. Count in your head. Past 90 seconds of explaining, wrap it up. Demo twice, then play.

Pair kids smart. Mix new + returning. Similar size. Rotate constantly — no one wrestles the same partner more than 2 rounds in a row.

Snack matters. The last 5 min of freeze pops and chatting is where friendships form. Don't skip it even if running behind — cut live short instead.

Energy management. You set the tone. If kids are flat, you probably are too. Hype it up, call out great effort by name, make it clear you're thrilled to be there.

Safety non-negotiables:

  • No locked hands around the neck
  • No pressure on joints
  • Coach always in position to see all pairs during live
HAVE A GREAT CAMP. You've got this.
